One day, holes across the world began to appear. In them contained monsters straight out of humanity's fictional databank. People in society then began to be chosen by a mysterious power to fight these creatures and hold back the tide of imminent destruction should they ever escape their underground prisons. These people were dubbed "Selected" and fight to defend humanity.
